After the Tears: A Gentle Guide to Help Children Understand Death
By Diane Crandall
This video is the perfect tool for helping children understand death, its process, and the steps necessary to begin healing. Diane
Crandall (the speaker) reminds me of one my old Sunday School teachers, whom I still look back on with fond and wonderful memories.
Crandall's soft and compassionate voice takes the delicate subject of death to new heights.
Kathrine Peterson (the one who designed and developed the video) goes beyond many children's grief books and videos to help children
understand the "whole" process of death. Peterson uses many wonderful illustrations to explain every stage of death, including what
happens to our bodies here on earth (i.e. burial process). She even includes great tools to help children begin to heal, such as the
balloon ceremony.
When my little one first passed away, my children and I had would hold a balloon ceremony every chance we got. We'd purchase a balloon,
hold hands, say a prayer asking God to let our little see the balloon and know that it was meant for her, and then we'd release it to
heaven. We'd watch the balloon go up, while a few tears streamed down our faces. Then we'd hug each other and continue with our day.
It was a simple and beautiful way to symbolically send her a message that basically said, "We're thinking of you today. We miss you,
and we love you so very much. We can't wait to see you again."
